Summary (English)

  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF SHKORPILOVTSI (Hristo Kuzov – h.kouzov@abv.bg) The quadriburgium was situated close to the mouth of the Fandakliiska River. A stratum was documented containing debris of burned timber buildings and sherds from bowls, dishes, pots and an amphora of the 3rd century AD. The next occupation period was related to the building of the quadriburgium at the end of the 3rd – beginning of the 4th century AD. The fortification wall was 2.50 m wide. Its southern and western sides were traced out. A partly preserved cloaca maxima was documented crossing the southern fortification wall. A postern was discovered on the western fortification wall. A water-conduit built of stones bonded with mortar was documented beneath the pavement of the postern. A second water-conduit built of stones bonded with mortar and paved with bricks was discovered to the south of the first one. Several buildings were partly excavated. Its walls were 70 cm wide, built of roughly-cut stones bonded with clay. The upper parts of the buildings were constructed of sun-dried bricks and the roofs were covered with tegulae and imbrices. Iron nails were found in the buildings. All the buildings were destroyed by a fire. A partly preserved stone pavement of a street was documented. The last occupation period dated to the end of the 5th – first several decades of the 6th centuries AD. Buildings of wattle-and-daub were constructed, with roofs covered with tiles. They were destroyed by a fire and two burned folles of Justin I were found in the debris.
