Summary (English)

  • The aim of this year’s excavation was to further clarify issues related to the settlement’s chronology, stratigraphy and the study of archaeological materials. The excavation of 2013 was extended to four new trenches with dimensions of 2 × 2 m and one trench with reduced dimensions of 1 × 2 m, in the southern sector of the settlement. All the newly excavated trenches, except for one of them, are located within the space left untouched by the excavations carried out by M. Korkuti. Excavation was carried out by removing layers of arbitrary thickness usually 5 cm and following the cultural stratigraphy when it became discernible. In this season, it was hoped to reach the sterile layer through excavation, but the very high-water level and the excessive rains that fell make that impossible. The cultural layer was present in all new trenches in the southeastern sector and showed strong similarities with the trenches opened during 2011. Intact cultural deposits were present only in layer 2, where pits and postholes are preserved, which are interrupted in the third layer. They provide some clues for the reconstruction of architectural plans. Although the upper remains of the site are heavily disturbed and likely reflect a mutilated sequence, the presence of intact features in some of the excavation areas provides a basis for assessing the nature of the settlement and its degree of permanence. Another goal of this year’s excavation was to test the hypothesis that the outer limits of the site were excavated, where dwellings may have been less dense or functionally specialized for activities such as grain processing, manure and slaughter of animals.
