Summary (English)

  • In April 2003, during the re-paving of the piazza, a sarcophagus closed by a stone slab was found up against the north wall of the church of S. Stefano. It contained five skeletons in supine position with the heads to the west. They overlay each other, however, only those on the lower level were disarticulated and jumbled in secondary deposition. The sarcophagus, of probable Roman date, may perhaps be linked to the late Imperial necropolis (unpublished) discovered in piazza Marconi: in the absence of any dating evidence it was not possible to date its re-use for this multiple burial.
