Summary (English)

  • The nymphaeum of the Villa of Domitian was brought to light in the zone to the east of the Appia, between the via Ercolano and via Caduti di via Fani. The structure, discovered in the 70s, was completely cleaned during preparations for the Jubilee of 2000. The complex of structures lies on the fourth level of terracing of the Villa of Domitian. It was built with square blocks of peperino and in opus reticolatum and was articulated in niches, one of them absidal. The nymphaeum dates to the Republican era, and belonged in origin perhaps to the private villa of Claudius; it was successively incorporated in the Domitianic residence.
