Summary (English)

  • During work carried out by the Comune di Roma (Dip. XII) for the construction of a sewer, structures came to light comprising two rows of large tufa blocks (0.54m wide, 0.70m high, length 0.55-1.20m) on a NE/SW alignment. The rows ran parallel to each other at a distance of circa 1.20m. In both cases only one course was conserved. The interpretation of these structures is difficult although it is possible to link them to an underground cuniculus, the entrance to which is adjacent to the northernmost of the two alignments. These walls rested on a layer which has produced pottery of the 5th to 6th century A.D. The area is situated immediately south of an ancient road (known from the bibliography). The orientation of these walls may have been determined by the presence of the road. (Stefano Musco, L. De Michelis, E. Brienza – Cooperativa Archeologica Parsifal)
