Summary (English)

  • During work on the restructuring of the Esquiline Market, in the area of the ex-garrisons “Sani” and “Pepe” behind Piazza Vittorio, the remains of Roman structures were uncovered in via Turati and via Ricasoli. In via Turati, below the Hotel ES, a small but interesting archaeological area is being set up in which can be seen, partly overlying the pars rustica of a villa, a side-street from the ancient via Tiburtina, the probable remains of monumental burials that were situated on a plateau close to one of the narrow hollows used for burials (here a bronze coin of the “prow” type, found using geognostic investigation, dates the structure to the Hannibalic war).
In via Ricasoli the construction of a small polycarbonate structure was completed to protect one of the better preserved absidal rooms. This room may have been part of a two storey nymphaeum, originally built in the early Imperial period and then completely restructured as part of the transformations which it is known took place in this area.
