Summary (English)
EXPLORATIONS IN ‘OLD SOZOPOL’ (Tsonya Drazheva, Dimitar Nedev – am_sozopol@abv.bg) Due to the restoration of the ‘Mediaeval Christian and ancient dwellings’ site, to the north of St. George Church, an area of c. 40 sq. m was explored. The occupation layers were badly destroyed due to later building works. A well-preserved stratum, situated above the bedrock, was explored; pottery of the second quarter of the 6th century BC dates the stratum. A cistern situated in the ‘Old carpenter’s shop’ site, in the western part of the peninsula, was also explored. A number of materials date the cistern to the second and third quarter of the 4th century BC. The structure was built in a trench and later, a shaft with irregular rectangular layout was constructed. The cistern was built of broken dry-stones. A number of local and black-gloss pottery, besides amphorae of Thassos and Herakleia Pontica (four of them with stamps), predominate among the finds. Another cistern was discovered below contemporary roadway in the same site. It has the shape of a double frustum of a cone. A basin with irregular shape for collecting sediments was cut in the bedrock on the bottom of the cistern. The cistern was constructed of concave stone ashlars in isodomic masonry without any mortar. A great number of pottery (amphorae, unguentaria, pitchers, jugs, dishes and cups) was found. The analysis of the material allows the monument to be dated to the end of the 1st – beginning of the 2nd centuries AD. A cultural layer, 1.3 m in thickness, was explored in the western part of the Skamnii Peninsula. A number of finds from the layer date to the 5th – 3rd centuries BC.
