Summary (English)
Four campaigns were conducted on the hill of Vescovo, in the central area of the plateau. Earlier surface investigations permitted the documentation of architectural terracottas belonging to buildings of the Archaic period, and materials datable between the seventh and sixth centuries BC. The excavations revealed a medieval building formed by two rectangular rooms arranged in an “L” and of differing dimensions, built with chips of basalt and tufa bound by yellowish mortar, in part constructed on the rocky natural bank. A small room abutted the building, on the inside of which were discovered a series of hearths with pavements in beaten earth. On the exterior of the room there is a circular structure perhaps used for the storing of foodstuffs. The complex, datable between the 12th and the 14th centuries on the basis of ceramic evidence, is interpretable perhaps as a small church with annexed residential structure and silos. Materials and stratigraphy inside one of the Medieval rooms and on the eastern side of the plateau belong to occupation of the plateau in the Late Bronze Age, Early Iron Age, and the Orientalizing and Archaic periods. At the moment archaeological evidence is missing for the Republican and Imperial periods.
