Summary (English)

  • The site of Ograda is located about 800 m southwest of the village of Bistrenci and 12 km west of the Demir Kapija Gorge, where in the medieval period Prosek – one of the most prominent towns – was located. The best evidence for the intensity of life in Prosek comes from the cemeteries of Crkviste and Manastir near Prosek and Ograda and Krstevi along the left bank of the Vardar River. During the building of the new village church, fragments of marble columns and an architrave belonging to some sacral building were discovered. In 1990/1991 and 1994, 39 mediaeval graves were excavated and during the 2000-2001 campaign 26 more graves. The necropolis is arranged in rows, with a certain distinction of groups formed according to the family relations of the deceased. The graves are oriented E-W, with slight deviations. The grave constructions range from burials in unmarked pits, graves partly or completely enclosed by stones or trapezoid shaped cyst graves. In the area between the graves, remains of animal bones and fragmented pottery were discovered, pointing to a burial rite. Among the grave offerings, the most numerous are jewellery: bracelets of bronze or glass paste, glass beads, rings and various types of earrings, local production copying Byzantine models, typical for the wider area on the Balkans during the 11th-12th centuries. The necropolis was active until the 14th century.
