Summary (English)

  • During the survey of the Kumanovo region in 2000 in the frame of the international scientific project “Pyraichmes”, a tumular necropolis (one larger and three smaller and very disturbed tumuli) was discovered at the site known as Strnovac, located in the village of Dolinac, municipality of Staro Nagoricane. In the excavations of two tumuli (I and II) conducted in 2001, only tumulus II was completely researched. It measures about 9 m in diameter and 1.2 m in height. It is encircled with one row of large stones, and the mound was formed with a large amount of stones and earth. In the tumulus, six carelessly formed cist graves built of larger stones were discovered. The osteological material is very poorly preserved, but it seems that we are dealing with skeletal burials. The most abundant movable artifacts are pottery vessels, found in the graves as grave offerings, but also scattered throughout the whole tumulus as part of a ritual held during and after the burials. The pottery fragments belong to various shapes: bowls, cups, jugs, kantharoi, urns, pyranoi etc. Among the grave goods, there were discovered spectacle-type fibulae, bronze bracelets with overlapping ends, round buttons with a cruciform perforation, bronze biconical beads, and an earring of spirally twisted bronze wire, a ball-shaped amber bead. A few iron knives were discovered in male burials.
Tumulus II belongs to a family tumulus. Based on the finds discovered, it can be dated to the first half of the 7th century BC.
