Summary (English)

  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF SOKOL (Vanya Petrova – vanyapetrova18@yahoo.co.uk, Nadezhda Todorova) The explorations of the Early Bronze Age stratum continued. Hearth 1 was discovered and fragmentary ceramic vessels were found. A clay wall of a building was explored and postholes, 10 cm in diameter, were documented. The explorations of Hearth 4b and the floor level with traces from fire continued. A pile of fragmentary ceramic vessels was documented on the floor. A trench of a wall of a building was explored in Trenches L7-М6-M7 and postholes were discovered, up to 60 cm deep and up to 45 cm in diameter. The monumental wooden posts probably supported walls of sun-dried bricks and a wooden roofing construction. A structure was discovered in Trench L8. It was 1.50 m in diameter and its walls and floor were plastered with clay. The collapsed walls were discovered, part of them decorated with clay bands in relief. Carbonized grain was documented on the floor. The finds from the excavations included sherds from amphorae, pots and dishes of the Early Bronze Age 1, and a flint arrowhead. The paleobotanical analysis showed the presence of einkorn, emmer, common wheat, barley, rye, lentils, peas, carbonized pieces of bread or porridge. The postholes contained carbonized wood mostly from oak and rarely from elm. Carbonized wood from alder, hornbeam and ash was also identified. The excavated buildings and structures dated to the end of the Early Bronze Age 1 (Ezero A Stage).
