Summary (English)

  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR VELINGRAD (Diana Gergova – dianagergova@gmail.com, Asen Salkin) The sanctuary was 20 m by 30 m in size, surrounded with a wall 2.20 m wide, built of roughly-cut stones bonded with clay. A tumulus was situated in the southern part of the sanctuary, 3 m in height and 15 m in diameter, with a tomb 3 m by 2.70 m in size and walls 2 – 2.20 m wide. The explorations of the eastern and the northern walls of the temenos were completed. The explorations of the room in the northwestern part of the sanctuary continued. It was connected to the northern and the western walls of the temenos and measured 4 m by 4 m, with walls 2.20 m wide, built of stone slabs. A layer up to 10 cm thick was discovered in the room, containing collapsed and burned fragmentary sun-dried bricks with imprints from wooden planks. A bronze coin of Macedonia of the 2nd – 1st century BC, minted in Thessalonica or Amphipolis, was discovered in the room. The explorations in the tomb continued and sherds, a tetrobol (fourrée) of Histiaia of 196 – 146 BC, collapsed fragmentary sun-dried bricks and charcoal were found. In addition, fragmentary dolia arranged close to each other, small cult ceramic vessels of the Tsepina Type and ceramic lids were discovered. A layer with carbonized grain was documented.
