Summary (English)

  • EXPLORATIONS OF BIZONE (Milena Tonkova – milenatonkova@hotmail.com, Christian Landes, Asen Salkin, Mariana Doncheva) Explorations of the layers containing Hellenistic material were carried out in sondage No. 1 located along a monumental building. The façade of the building was revealed. It has symmetrical entrances. The building was constructed on an artificial terrace on the southern slope of Cape Chirakman. The ongoing excavations of the complex revealed intact cultural layers. Some strata are without any material. Others display traces of intensive activities and contain charcoal and archaeological material (mainly fragmentary amphorae, imported and local pottery, animal bones and mussel shells). The amphorae were imported from Thasos, Herakleia Pontica, Sinope, Rhodos, Knidos and Kos. The pottery consists of several groups with diverse ethnocultural characteristics and different chronology. The older strata contain fragments of local grey ceramic vessels and Greek pottery dated to the 4th century BC. Several sherds of black-gloss Greek pottery are imports from Pergamon, while the number of fragmentary kantharoi of the 3rd – 2nd centuries BC, the ichthyai, etc. represent the group of the ‘Pontic’ pottery, which is the most numerous one. Two other groups date to the same period: local brick-colored ceramic vessels and Celtic pottery. The last group, besides fragmentary glass bracelets of Celtic type found during the previous excavation seasons, raises the question of the presence of Celtic ethnic groups in the hinterland of Bizone.
