Summary (English)

  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF ISKRA (Ivan Dzhambov – djambov@uni-plovdiv.bg, Stoyan Popov) A room built of stones bonded with mud, 2.50/2.72 m by 2.42/2.57 m in size, was discovered in the southern part of the narthex of the church. The western wall of the church served as the western wall of the room. Three small iron knives, sherds and fragments of glass bracelets were found in the room. A wall dividing the nave and the narthex was discovered. It was built of roughly-cut stones bonded with mortar. The chapel was divided by a wall built of stones bonded with mud, 60 cm wide and leveled with a course of bricks. Thus, the room constructed inside the chapel measured 2.80/2.90 m by 2.56/2.80 m. There were graffiti on the western and the southern wall of the room, showing a ploughman and a plough, a galloping horse, a house with ridge roof and Cyrillic letters. The rooms built inside the narthex and the chapel functioned after the church and the chapel were already not in use. They were used either as living rooms, or as storage rooms.
