    Summary (English)

    • The object of this research was insula 14 of regio VII. It occupied a peripheral position with respect to the hypothetical position of the “Altstadt” outlined by von Gerkan and Eschebach, exactly along its eastern edge. At least a third of the north-eastern limit of the insula was constituted, on the lower level by large squared blocks of soft lava placed on edge, whilst the upper part was in opus incertum. According to the hypothesis formulated by Eschebach on the basis of the hypogeum found below the natatio of the Stabian baths, the ancient road which pre-dated the rectification of the via dell’Abbondanza passed along the northern side of the insula or immediately behind it. This research aims to define the insula as it was in 79 A.D. and to identify the previous phases beginning with that characterised by the hypothetical “Altstadt”. Survey work began in May 2002, whilst excavations began in 2004 and continued in 2005 and 2006. During the first excavation campaign trenches were dug in the house situated at No. 14-16, in rooms 13, 14, 8 and 11. The decision to dig in the northern rooms was determined by the wish to explore the foundations of the north wall, built in opus quadratum. The 2005 campaign , in the same house, examined rooms 12 and 7 and a new trench was opened in the viridarium (15) of the house next door, situated at No. 9. The last excavation campaign, undertaken in 2006, concentrated on the latter domus, in particular trenches were placed in the portico (23), rooms 20, 21 and 22 and the baths (19). The data acquired so far, which is still in the study phase, provides new elements which are of use for the definition of the phases preceding 79 A.D.. The research project also provides teaching and practical training for students on the Conservation Course. (Antonio De Simone).
