Summary (English)

  • Excavations undertaken in 2006 examined both the interior and the exterior of the stronghold’s perimeter wall. In the outer area the investigation looked at the wall which had two phases: the first of which the eastern and western perimeter walls are visible, with a gate to the north, and a second phase for which the standing structures are evident. From the excavation it emerged that, following the collapse of the rounded terminal part of the perimeter wall, a new structure, the south tower was built, attached to the portion of wall that was still intact. The level created by the razing of the preceding walled structure was then used as a floor. Following the discovery of a burnt layer, it seemed evident that a fire had occurred when the round structure was no longer in use. On the other side of the hill no traces were found of this phase of the perimeter wall, but there were traces of a subsequent phase, close to the opening towards the settlement found to the south of the stronghold. In the interior, south of the excavation area, by the collapse of the gate towards the settlement, two small rooms were uncovered, at right angles to the walls on an N-S alignment. Room 1 had 4 post holes one in each corner, which were probably part of the room’s original roof covering. In the second room a pottery fragment with impressed straw decoration dating to the 11th-12th century was found. (MiBAC)
