Summary (English)

  • Remains of private residences were discovered in the lower part of Palestrina, down the via degli Arcioni and in relation to the “Propileo” and to the vaulted areas that consitute the substructure of the basalt street called at present via del Sole. The investigations have brought to light a terracing in “opera poligonale” and a series of rooms with walls of quadratic blocks of tufo restored in opus reticulatum and latericium.
The most ancient phase of this structural complex consisted perhaps of small houses which may be traced back to the 3rd-2nd century BC. The most interesting finding includes a large domus of atrium-type, of which part of the impluvium remains, an ala, a corridor, various service areas, a large peristyle and a small balneum. The rooms are paved with black and white mosaics of geometric motifs, datable between the 1st and the beginning of the 3rd century AD. The richness of the decoration suggests that the domus belonged to members of the local aristocracy.
