Summary (English)
In 2005, rescue archaeological research was carried out in V. Nazor Street, on an area of 100 odd square meters, in the immediate vicinity of the Forum. The excavations on the neighbouring plots during the seasons of 1956, 1966, 1971 and 1989 had given an insight into the stratigraphy of the wider area. A Roman layer of dark brown soil and rubble was found immediately under the top soil of more recent rubble. Numerous segments of architecture point to the existence of an opulent Roman building which was later reconstructed. Given the fact that the area that the site encompasses is too large for a Roman villa, the remains of the Roman architecture are to be associated with a thermal complex. Moveable archaeological finds corroborate a sequence of occupation from the 1st to the 5th century AD. Two building phases of the 2nd and 3/4th centuries have been identified, which corresponds to the situation on the nearby site of Dječje igralište (“Playground”). At the western part of the site, a third building phase of the 1st century was also recorded. It is characterised by an extensive use of wood in combination with brick. Because of the significance of this site, the construction of cellars in this location was prohibited. (Maja Šunjić)
