In 2002 the excavation area was widened to the north-west, bringing to light the central-western part of the north nave down to the medieval floor level datable to the end of the 14th century.
A trench was also put into the central-eastern part of the south nave which revealed the east-west limit and evidence of the southern access to the crypt and its transformation before the underground space went out of use. The crypt was entered from the side naves: the placing of the crypt’s lateral facades in a backward position with respect to its central one created a corridor, delimited to the north by the crypt structure and to the south by the church perimeter. The staircase linking the floor of the nave to that of the crypt began at the corner of the crypt. At sometime after its construction the system of access to the crypt was modified, the lateral nave was repaved and at the moment it went out of use the staircases were demolished leaving only the impression of the first down step. The crypt door was flanked by two semicircular columns that were linked to the vaulted roof. In the south-western corner a blocked door led into another room adjacent to the crypt; the crypt walls were covered in white plaster; large re-used stone slabs functioned as bases for the numerous columns which supported its roof.
