Summary (English)

  • Between July and October 2006 work for the urban restructuring of the stretch of Via Veneto between Largo Fellini and Via Boncompagni brought to light the remains of some Roman buildings relating to a peripheral area of the horti Sallustiani.

The archaeological layers identified were found at increasingly superficial levels at the start of Via Veneto, whilst in the direction of Via Boncompagni the ancient stratigraphy was rarely reached.
The structures, found in several places immediately below the make up for the modern paving, belonged to a series of rooms mostly on a north-south alignment which can be directly related to the structures already noted by Lanciani in the Forma Urbis.

The construction phases seem to tie in with those already known in the area. The first, a late Republican phase with facings in opus reticulatum of tufa cubilia, linked directly to the first layout of the horti Sallustiani. Subsequently, the level on which the new walls with opus latericius facings were positioned was raised, often by the use of loose foundations of amphora which characterise finds in this area. These walls which may relate to the Hadrianic restructuring and later remodelling in the Severan period. The new walls follow the line of the earlier structures, preserving their alignment and room layout.

Lastly, a short tract of paving which re-used the tufa cubilia from the Roman walls may relate to the Villa Ludovisi. (Mariarosaria Barbera, Gloria Adinolfi, Rodolfo Carmagnola)
