Chronology

  • 200 AD - 400 AD

Season

    • During the construction of the fourth lane of the A4 MI-BG motorway a necropolis with 50 cremation burials came to light. Dating to between the end of the 2nd/early 3rd century and the mid 4th century, the burials were on two stratigraphically distinct levels and went out of use after 268 AD. The tomb groups and offerings placed outside the burials mainly comprise coarse ware pottery vessels, but there were also examples of so-called “Padovan ARS” and some coins. Their study has provided further knowledge of these pottery classes, which were widely used in Lombardy but are not always found in good datable contexts. Moreover, the necropolis provides further confirmation of the continued use of the cremation ritual during the 4th century in some areas of Lombardy.
