Chronology

  • 400 AD - 700 AD

Season

    • Archaeological excavations conducted in Korisha were organized in subduing the excavation area in 10 (ten) trenches; respectively 3 (three) areas of the narthex (trenches I-III), 6 (six) trenches in the area of the nave (trenches IV-VI) and the apse which was considered as the trench X. The excavation has shown that a large amount of the building material that filled the interior of the church were actually the remains of the collapsed material of the fallen roof and destructed material of the walls of the monument. Moreover, this confirmed by the large amount of the stones, tiles, bricks and lime mortar, that covered the monument. In this demolished layer, a certain amount of the pottery fragments and glass fragments were found. Additionally, several small metallic finds were among the finds, which altogether didn’t represent a ‘pure’ cultural archaeological layer; however, the results of the finds do show mingling of the materials deposited in two different periods. It should be highlighted, that besides the discovered removable material contemporaneous with the church building, a relative amount of the prehistoric shards were among the discovered material (which potentially indicate an earlier phase of the monument). The main features excavated in this season are; the presbytery; sintrone; traces of the chancel and the rails. Altogether, based on the removable artifacts discovered at the site (the decoration motifs and the forms of the pottery), and on the other hand, based on the typology of the building; the building construction elements and the planimetry of the church, are indicative that we are dealing here with an Early Christian church built sometime during the 6th century.
