Chronology

Season

    • The 2002 campaign in the Roman stone camp of Vărădia-"Pustă" aimed to identify the location of the commander’s house (praetorium) of the auxiliary military unit garrisoned here. In order to fulfill this purpose two trenches were excavated to the right side of the headquarters building (principia), i. e. in the latus praetorii dextrum. It came out that here only barracks were situated. These buildings were made of timber and adobe and had only one phase that was destroyed violently by fire. This year’s finds included weapons (arrow and spear points, sling projectiles) and only one coin, from Vespasianus. No roof tiles were found, which suggests that the barracks were covered with shingles. Thus we have until now no further chronological hints regarding the dating of the fort that could lead us further on from the reign of Trajan. No additional clues regarding the unit of this fort came to light either. Further excavations should look for the praetorium either to the left of the principia (latus praetorii sinistrum) or even to the back of the headquarters building.
