Chronology

Season

    • IIn the autumn of 2001, during rescue excavations, we saved a Bronze Age tomb in the village of Cârlomaneşti, Buzău county, near the Bronze Age settlement of the same locality situated at Cetăţuia. For objective reasons an archaeological excavation was impossible at the time. In September 2003, we started the excavations in order to save the Bronze Age cemetery previously destroyed by erosion and villagers. The cemetery is located on a large plateau called "La arman" which is part of the northern terrace of Nişov spring, at about 400 m south-west from the settlement of Cetaţuia. Today the terrace is about 40 m high and is cultivated with maize. The first tombs appeared in a ravine which crossed the plateau and became the main street of the village. Judging from the grave goods found in the first grave - especially a cup with two handles - the burial belongs to the phase Ic1 of the Monteoru culture. Although at Cetaţuia we conducted excavations on a large scale during several campaigns in 1972-1981 only one tomb, belonging to a late stage of Monteoru culture, was discovered inside the settlement, as the location of the cemetery remained unknown. Due to the crop season and poor financial support, the rescue excavations of the autumn of 2003 were conducted on a small scale. At the same time, a topographical sketch of the entire plateau was conducted. In the first campaign we discovered 15 grave goods on an area of about 80 square metres. The grave goods include jewelry – earrings and a so-called Ösenhalsring collar – and pottery.
