Chronology

Season

    • The site was found some years ago and excavations were conducted in 1977-78 and in 1985. The systematic researches began as late as in 1993 and by 2003 the 10th campaign was conducted. In a lower area, swampy in the old times, dependent on the lower side of the Someş River, a complex evolution of the occupation level was recorded, from the Late Bronze Age to the 8th century A.D. We had participants from the University of Florida (Gainsville), coordinated by the associate Professor of Mediaeval History Florin Curta, Ph.D. This year we discovered two important archaeological complexes dating from the Late Bronze Age (no. 61 and no. 63), which revealed some pottery and other artifacts of Suciu de Sus Culture. Another two complexes (no. 59 and no. 62) are represented by the ruins of two burned dwellings from the Hallstatt A Period. The ruins contain pottery found also in the Gáva 1 and Lăpuş 2 cultures. From the Early Middle Ages we identified archaeological complexes, but we found and studied other three wells (from complexes nos. 58, 60 and pit no. 293) dating to the Roman period. Due to its large sizes, complex no. 58 might have been even a tank for keeping considerable water reserves.
