Chronology

Season

    • The systematic researches in August - September 2003 at Măgura Uroiului were conducted in two sectors: Sector 1, Terrace 1: The overview photograph (taken in 2000) and a rescue excavation (in 2001) both revealed the possible existence of a fortified settlement. The systematic researches started during the summer of 2003 by excavating two large sections: Mg 1 (111 x 3), Mg 2 (100 x 3). In the east end of Mg 1, between the meters 1 - 12, we found the vallum. At the upper part of the vallum we discovered five stone layers. Behind the vallum we uncovered a trench, but could not establish its date with certainty. Between meters 15 - 16 we found a pit, containing pottery and bones. On this Mg 1 we opened three squares. In square 1 (between 95 - 98 meters) a Wietenberg culture dwelling was uncovered. We also continued the excavation in the section S1/2001. Regarding this, the archaeological situation is similar with S1/2003. In S1/2001, under the stone layer we found pits and dwellings dated to the First Iron Age, containing pottery and bronze objects. Sector 2, Terrace 2: In the spring of 2003 we recovered a bronze deposit discovered by an illegal action. Our institution got only a few fragments. For that reason we conducted excavations and found a Coţofeni culture dwelling. During the 2003 campaign we researched again this dwelling. Judging from the shape of the dwelling and the pottery, it may be said that this dwelling dates to the second phase of this culture.
