Chronology

Season

    • Between the 8th of August and the 5th of September 2003 the archaeological excavations in the Păuleni-Ciomortan settlement continued. They focused on the remains of the Neolithic occupation levels (basically of the Ariuşd - Cucuteni culture) situated in the north – north-eastern part of the site, under the defense rampart in the Bronze Age. We excavated two Neolithic dwellings in part: L.5 dating to the earliest phase of the Aeneolithic occupation in the settlement, and L.16 dating to a later phase of the Aeneolithic occupation. Both dwellings were built out of wooden frame and clay. Only part of them was researched. Their investigations will go on in the following years, depending on the financial support. Besides many artifacts, one of the most interesting finds was the miniature altar discovered inside the dwelling L 16. At the same time, geo-magnetical investigations were conducted, proving that most of the constructions containing burned clay are situated on the edges of the plateau occupied by the settlement. The middle of the settlement is poorer in burned clay agglomeration, but has a high density of pits and holes.
