Chronology

Season

    • In 2005 we conducted archaeological excavations in all the sectors of the site. In the sections excavated to the east and west of the great Tower we identified the oldest fortification system existing at Noviodunum and representing the earth phase of the Roman camp, dating to the 1st century AD. During the 2004 campaign we set as our goal to clear Tower A, that was uncovered in 2004. In the south-east corner of the town, the goal of the 2005 campaign was to finalise the excavations undertaken in the upper Byzantine and Middle Ages layers, especially in the north part of the sector. The deep excavations in the south area of the sector made it possible to observe the successive mediaeval, modern and contemporary destructions of the south-east corner of the fortification. In the Cemetery - Clay Pit sector (extra-muros) during the 2005 campaign we excavated 25 archaeological complexes: 13 domestic pits dating to the 9th - 10th centuries and 19 Roman - Byzantine tombs dating to the 4th - 5th centuries.
