Chronology

  • 480 BC - 323 BC

Season

    • From June 6 to 18th, 2005 the Albanian Rescue Archaeology Unit with the collaboration of the Institute of Archaeology of Tirana undertook a project which consisted in test-pits along the area where during December 2004 and January 2005 an intensive surface survey had been undertaken. The purpose of this survey was to explore the area where the national road Fier-Levan would pass, to identify archaeological monuments in this area and to estimate to what degree they would be affected by the new infrastructure. Test-pits were concentrated in the area between the villages of Pojan and Shën Pjetër till the Vjosë-Fier-Levan channel and in the area from southwest Pojan till the Lagja Bonjakët and further. In this area were included 6 tracts T058, T059, T060, T063, T064, T065 where a total of 40 pits were dug. The purpose was to locate the archaeological evidence rather than to carry out large scale excavations. In the tract T063, that consist of trenches S026, S038 and S040, was identified a pavement area, possibly belonging to a courtyard of a private or public building dated to the Classical Period. The same stratigraphy was noticed in all the excavation pits undertaken around this monument: a) the first layer, the agricultural one, rich in finds, b) the second layer, the sandy one, with less finds, c) the third layer, and the clayey one, sterile. There were also found pottery fragments and other important types of finds.
