Season

    • EXPLORATIONS IN ODESSOS (Alexander Minchev – aleksander.minchev@gmail.com, Valentin Pletnyov) Part of the fortification wall of mediaeval Varna was discovered. It is 2 m in width and dates to the 11th – 12th centuries. The explored length of the wall was 30 m. It was built of small ashlars with a bonding medium of mortar and many spolia of Roman and late antique buildings. During the excavations, parts of two streets (cardo and decumanus) of the 2nd – 6th centuries were discovered. Only the middle parts of the streets were preserved. The preserved length of the cardo is 8 m. It was covered with three consequent pavements of stone slabs, placed each above other, and the latest pavement dates to the second half of the 4th century AD. The decumanus crossed the cardo to the north of the explored site and only a small part of it paved with stone slabs was preserved. Both streets had drains built of stones. Other drains, both terracotta pipes and stone-built, ran into the street system of drains from the neighboring buildings, which date to the Roman period. A small part of a building that date to the 2nd – 3rd centuries AD was explored. The main gate, a part of the inner yard with stone pavement and drains that ran into the drain of decumanus were discovered. Remains of glass-production of the 5th – 6th centuries AD were found in the street drains. Most likely, a glass-workshop was located in the near vicinity.
