Season

    • The excavation examined the interior of the earliest church (phase I) and the tanks for the miraculous holy water (phases II and II). _Phase I (11th-14th century)_ _Ia_: construction of the church with a simple hall and circular apse, cobble and stone walls bonded with white mortar, inner facings with a carefully executed even pattern. In the apse area there was a platform (40 cm high) below the altar, frescoed with velario motifs in yellow on a red background. perhaps connected to two steps. _Ib_: the platform was enlarged and the floor of the church raised by 20 cm. _Ic_: the pavement, now in limestone and shale slabs was again raised. A stone was inserted in correspondence with the entry threshold which permitted the raising of the door . Almost at the point where the apse joined the east wall a large block of stone was uncovered and hollowed to create an internal basin (100 x 70 x 33cm) with probably housing for a lid. This rock may have been pre-existing and raised so that it was on the same level as the new pavement. _Id_: further remaking of the floor, traces of charcoal and the remains of a hearth , perhaps relating to a phase of abandonment and occasional use of the church. _Ie_: a series of five floods and the subsequent restoration work render the structure unusable for several periods. The earliest church, following its collapse and partial robbing, was demolished prior to the construction of the new sanctuary (phase III) in the 15th century. Two tanks for the miraculous water, relating to phases Ia and III, were partially investigated. To date only documents from the beginning of the 17th century mentioned a source of miraculous water which was said to have been discovered by the hermit Giacomino during the church’s construction on the site of the ruins of a cult building which was destroyed by the construction of Lavello castle.
