Season

    • EXPLORATIONS IN SERDICA (Nadezhda Kirova – kirova77@yahoo.com) Seven graves were explored in the western cemetery. Each of graves Nos. 4 and 5 contained a coin of the late 4th century AD. A man, 20 – 40 years old, was buried in grave No. 7. Tomb No. 1 is barrel-vaulted and is built of bricks and mortar. It consists of antechamber and burial chamber, 4.10 m in length, 1.90 m in width and east – west oriented with an entrance to the east. Fragments of stone slabs and an Early Byzantine capital were found. Tomb No. 2 consists of antechamber and barrel-vaulted chamber. It is east – west oriented with an entrance to the west and is 3.36 m in length by 2.55 m in width. Human and animal bones, a coin of the second half of the 5th century AD, sherds, fragment of capital and a base of a column were found. Bones of two men, 20 – 25 and 40 – 60 years old, were found. Tomb No. 3 is a barrel-vaulted chamber with an entrance to the west, 2.70 m in length, 2.56 m in width and with secondary dromos. Pottery, metal objects and two coins of the end of the 4th – 5th centuries AD were found. A skeleton of a man, 20 – 25 years old, oriented to the west and bones of two individuals were found in the tomb. Tomb No. 4 is built of bricks and consists of an antechamber and a barrel-vaulted burial chamber with an entrance to the west. It is 3.88 m in length and 1.68 m in width and is east – west oriented. Human bones were found. Built grave No. 1 is rectangular and is constructed of bricks and mortar. It contained human bones. Walls of a three-nave basilica of the 5th century AD with narthex and 19.70 m in width were discovered.
