Season

    • Following the indication of Sig. Orante Ventura, in July 2007 investigations of the site of Ortucchio-Strada 28 recommenced. Intense agricultural work in this area had brought to light on the surface a consistent group of lithic material of the Sauveterrian industry and these new investigations were aimed at confirming the conservation of an archaeological deposit. . The settlement of Ortucchio, indicated by Giorgio Tempesti, was investigated in 1957 by A.M. Radmilli and in 1958 by S.M. Puglisi, who, underneath an eneolithic context, identified a layer with evidence for a microlithic industry, defined as being of paleo-mesolithic origins. The systematic excavations carried out in 1962 by the University of Pisa and directed by Giuliano Cremonesi permitted a better understanding of the stratigraphic position of the Mesolithic levels. The excavations conducted in 1969 and 1970 by the University of Pisa identified only deposits relating to the eneolothic frequentation of the site. The excavations undertaken in July 2007 focused on an area in parcel 237 lot 3bis of map Sheet 19 of the Comune of Ortucchio. Three trenches of varying dimensions were opened covering a total area of 25 square metres. Only Trench 1 has revealed consistent evidence which relates to Mesolithic occupation. The scarse amount of archaeological material comes mainly from agricultural land and from some lenses of the deposit in the sterile silt. Research continued with two seasons of field survey: the first in December 2007 defined the extension of the site and confirmed the conservation of the archaeological deposit, through coring in the area of land next to the excavations; the second in October 2008 with the participation of dott. Ermanno Danese was aimed at the sampling of the flint on the tectonic zone of Monte Genzana. The research programme also involved: - sedimentological analysis by dott.ssa Cristina Fabbri and Lucia Angeli and coordinated by dott. Giovanni Boschiam; - technological analysis of the lithic industry by dott. Fabio Negrino. The archaeological material is characterized by the greater presence of microlithic finds, compared to what had emerged from the preceding studies, confirming the presence in the territory of a typical characteristic of _facies Sauveterriana_.
