EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF GURMAZOVO (Svetla Petrova, Rumen Ivanov – rumenvily@mail.bg) A fragment of colonna miliaria placed along the Roman road was found. It has a preserved height of 1.52 m and is 45 cm in diameter. The colonna miliaria had been used for an extended period. Greek letters are visible in its preserved part. Later, a Latin text was additionally inscribed on the column. The name CONSTA [tinus, ntius, ns] is recognized, probably the name of Emperor Constantine the Great, or one of his sons. The colonna miliaria stood on Via Diagonalis, which began from Singidunum (Belgrade), passed through Viminacium (Kostolac) – Naissus (Niš) – Serdica (Sofia) – Philippopolis (Plovdiv) – Hadrianopolis (Edirne) and reached Byzantion (Constantinople). Other colonnae miliariae were found on the road segment Naissus – Serdica. During a field survey in 1992, a vicus of the Roman period and the Late Antiquity was registered in the region of the Village of Gurmazovo, at 300 – 400 m distance from the location of the colonna miliaria. A fragment of another column is kept in the centre of the Village of Gurmazovo. Part of the title of a Roman emperor is readable: Pontifex Maximus.
