The trench dug in the _via Emilia_ brought to light the beaten-earth surface of the ancient _via Aemilia Scauri_, which corresponds in width and direction (north-east/south-west) with the present road. The ancient stretch of road was about 5.30 m wide and presented a “donkey back” profile. Numerous cart tracks were visible in the surface. The road had been re-laid (using dumps of sand and gravel taken from the alluvial deposits in the basin of the Scrivia torrent) in a period which cannot be fixed due to a lack of datable archaeological material.
