Season

    • Two catacomb type graves on the territory of the Verkhnyo-Saltivs`kyy cemetery were investigated in 2006. Catacomb 84. The dromos was oriented east—west, length 4,46 m. The depth of the dromos in front of the entrance is 3,05 m. The entrance to the burial chamber had an arch form. The rectangular burial chamber was 1,9×1,6 m in size and 1,3 m depth. In the chamber was revealed a twin burial (male and female). The skeletons were intentionally damaged . The female`s remains were located near the eastern wall of the chamber. The male`s remains were located near the entrance to the chamber. Both deceased were buried supine with their heads to the entrance of the chamber. Under the male skeleton was revealed a bedding of charcoal (1,2×0,7 m in size, its thickness is 1—2 sm). Small hand-made pottery was found in the left corner of the chamber. Its rim was broken in ancient times. The remains of the ceremonial food (eggshell) were found nearby. A female was buried with grave goods: a bronze ring on the third finger of the right hand, a bronze wire wristband on the right hand, a small bronze molded bell near the elbow of her left hand, there was also a bronze solar amulet which looks like a ring with falcon heads, on a neck — 10 cornelian beads, 18 beads with metallic spacer, a small eyed bead. The male grave goods included: an iron tanged knife near the right wrist, in the waistband — a fragmented pewter belt buckle, some bronze repoussé plates, a bronze repoussé tip, a bronze spiral wire bead, on the bones of the left foot — a pewter shoe buckle and a fragments of a shoe belt. Catacomb 85. The dromos (length is 3,4 m) was oriented east—west. The remains of the ceremonial food (calf`s long bone) were found at the bottom of the dromos. The entrance to the rectangular burial chamber (1,9×1,34 m) had an arched form. The tomb contained a female`s burial. The skeleton was intentionally damaged of an anatomical connection. The upper part of the skeleton has been destroyed during ancient times. But it is clear that the deceased was supine along eastern wall, with her head to the left from the entrance. The skull was found in the north—western chamber`s corner. Some cervical vertebras and chest bones were found in the north—eastern corner in an anatomical connection. The grave-goods were peculiar for a woman. Bronze repoussé buttons-bells were found near the skull. A similar buttons-bells find near the chest, pelvis and right humerus. On a neck were the remains of beads: blue beads (107), pink coral beads (63), small pearls (4), some beads with metallic spacer, eyed. Three spherical buttons were found near the right humerus. At the elbow of her right hand lay two iron-tanged knives, put into wooden scabbard with iron binding plate. Two bronze cast pendants of a butterfly-like form were found nearby. Among the mixed chest bones were revealed fragments of charcoal. At the foot of the deceased were found 14 pewter pednants of a cross-like form. Perhaps the pednants were sewn onto her clothing.
