The research programme undertaken by Florence University at the Badia di San Salvatore at Vaiano is part of the abbey restoration project. The research aims not only to complete the excavations around the cloister, but also, in collaboration with the Archaeological Superintendency of Tuscany, to create an on-site museum providing information about the life of the monastic complex.
To date the standing remains have been documented which, together with the evidence emerging from the excavations, will form a map of the walls, which can then be used to find parallels present in the territory of the Val di Bisenzio. A preliminary survey was carried out in the valley aimed at identifying other sites for future excavation.
