Season

    • In 2007 the excavation area was 120 m2. The excavation V is very informative (102 m2). It is situated to the northwest from Desyatynna Tserkva. Excavation was at the area of southeastern part of Starokyivs’ka Hora (Starokyivs’ka Hill) and crossing the fosse. Thickness of the ocсupation layer nearly 2 m. There were some small fragments of hand-made pottery of Scythian time (6th — 4th cent. BC.). In the western part of the excavation V was found a part of a big rectangular building. Building was deepened into a virgin soil on 0,8 m. There were revealed the remains of the wooden siding. Judging from the finds complex dated to third part of the 10th cent. AD. There were few fragmets of pots, three Pyrophyllite spindles, two bone borers, two glass beads and a piece of the glass ring. Above those objects were found remains of burned household building which dated to the end of 12th—13th cent. AD. There were remains of people, which had been killed by Mongols in December 1240 in the foundation trench of this building. Two small pits and two ditches belonged to the after-mongol time (the second half of the 13th — 14th cent. AD) There was found a fragment of a fresco with the image of the saint with a gesture of blessing. Central and east part of excavation V was crossed by the trace of fosse, which belonged to the fortress of Starokyivs`ke horodyshche (hillfort). There was founded multilayer’s wooden – ground construction, which was consisted of ten stages.
    • Investigation of Kyivs’ke Horodishche (hillfort). In 2008 near the north – west corner of Desyatynna Tserkva had finished excavation of the ditch, and began excavation extension. Area of work was 114 m2. In 2008 was finished investigation of wooden-grounded construction which was situated in inside the plan of ditch. The lower tier consisted of short pieces of logs. It thickness was 0, 3 m. It was put perpendicular into the fosse. It was deepened into a step 0, 15 — 0,2 m. Near the twenty tiers was founded. Each of tiers was consist of mixed ground. Construction was dated the second part of X century by the finds. Likely, the function of this construction was a berm (level space separating two areas). Another one horizontal step with small fosse was founded near the centre of fosse. Bottom of small fosse was at a depth of 5, 5 m of modern surface. In the top part of fill was founded horizon with burned ground and coal. These were signs of fire. Object dated by the finds of the fill in 9th — first half 10th Man-made slope of the ditch was blocked by layer with coal and ash, animal’s bones and fragments of red wheel-made pottery of the second half 10th. Among them the most interesting are fragments of two jugs with highneck and Byzantium wheel-made jug. Founded, that the ditch of Kyiv’s city-site was reconstructed not simultaneously. The most important of the reconstruction was in the second half of 10th, when the tranch was deepened and on the special cutted slope was built wooden-ground berm. Earlier time of ditch could dated to the end of the 9th — the first half of the 10th. Investigation along south wall of Church’s elevation. Along the external wall southern gallery of Desiatynna Tserkva excavated area more, than 14 m2. The were two medieval graves of the 17th — 18th. The thickness of occupation layer of ancient Kiev’s Rus` time is 0, 6 — 0, 8 m. Also, on the territory of excavation founded two pagan burials. One of them was burial of women. The grave goods are represented by 43 beads. Under the burial was a pit with burned ground. Probably, it explained by burial tradition. Also on excavation area were found the remains of the male burial. In object were found the fragments of wheel-made pot of the middle — second half of the 10th.
    • At the excavation VII was investigated area 80 m2 . The layer of black humus included fragments of wheel-made pottery of the end of 10th, small pieces hand-made pottery, colored metal bell, animal bones, coals, burned clay and burned bones. Very important was find dwelling with hearth, which was oriented along cardinal direction. The foundation trench was deepened by 0, 8 m (by 0,4 m in virgin soil). In northwest corner was situated hearth. It was cutted in loamy soil. Hearth’s length was 0, 9 m. There were brown and red-brown hand-made pottery in construction of the hearth. Previously dwelling dates to the 8th. It is the most ancient build, which was situated from the floor side of Starokyivs’ke Horodyshche (hillfort). There were remains of three burials dated to the 10th in excavation VII. In the south side of excavation were revealed objects, which had been earlier, than Desiatynna Tserkva. Among them were found burials 76 and 80, dwelling of the 8th. There was a pagan burial near the central church’s building. Width of grave’s pit was 0, 38 m. There were two clusters of beads, which consist of 44 beads (42 glass, 2 cornelian), four bells, borer of bronze and some iron items. In Autumn was continued work at excavation IV. Workplace was on 6 m to the west of western elevation of Church of 10th.. There was undefeated stratigraphy, were revealed construction layers of reconstruction of the 12th and that time, when the church was built. There were pieces of fresco(s) in the layer of reconstruction. The layer of the time of Church building consisted of pieces of lime. Cultural layer has 0, 4 m in thickness. There were hand-made pottery and wheel-made pottery of the end of the 10th. Also were found some pits at the level of the virgin soil. It is a part of a fence, which consisted of thirteen pits. It was above a corner of a rectangular building. This building was deepened in virgin soil to 0,4 m. Filling of building consisted of hand-made wares and polished pottery During 2005 — 2009 on the territory of Desiatynna Tserkva were found 22 burials pre-Christian time, crossing the ditch, and objects of earlier time — Trypillya culture and Zarubyntsi culture.
    • In 2011 was finished investigation in the excavation IX. Area of excavation was 15 m2. On this excavation was investigated external edge of the ditch of Starokyivs’ke Horodyshche (hillfort). The length of edge about 4 m. Distance to the north wall of Desiatynna Tserkva is 5 m. The external edge of ditch had form as an escarpment. It consist of a step (1,4 m width), which was deepened in the virgin soil 2,0 m. The external wall of escarpment was tilted. Very difficult stratigraphy was above edge of the ditch. It included a few streaks (0,1 — 0,5 m width). This was considered with building and reconstruction of the Church in the 10th — 12th. There were many fragments of plinth of the end of the 10h, pieces of mortar, more than one hundred fragments of white marble, a few fragments of the finished sandstone. In the excavation IV to the west of the Church were investigated areas, which hadn’t investigated yet. There were found 6 Late Medieval burials (17th—18th cent. AD). There was the ditch of the fence of the 11th to the north of square pylon. The ditch had some remains of vertical wooden boards. The ditch (length 1,9 m) was followed by west façade (elevation) of Church at a distance 5, 5 m. Near was investigated a segment of a ditch of tumulus. It had width 1,0 — 1,1 m, depth in the virgin soil was 0, 4 m. All depth of ditch was not less 1 m. In November in the excavation IV was found a pit (1,25 × 1,10 m). There were finds of the Late Trypillya period — fragments of rim with notching, pieces of polished bowls, sides of pots with scratches, fragments of bones. Occupation layer of this place are rich with fragments of hand-made pottery of Late Trypillya, the Late Bronze time, the Early Iron Age and Early Slavic time.
