Season

    • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS IN AUGUSTA TRAIANA – VEREYA (Dimiter Yankov – dimiter_yankov@yahoo.com, Georgi Iliev) The site is situated at 8 m to the north of the outer fortification wall. Seventeen graves of a Muslim cemetery of the 19th century were explored. A water-conduit of the 4th century AD was explored. It measured 38 cm by 46 cm and was built of stones and bricks bonded and plastered with mortar. The ditch of the fortification wall was situated close to the water-conduit. This was the reason for the construction of an additional support to the water-conduit. Architectural elements of a destroyed public building of the end of the 2nd – 4th centuries AD were reused during the construction of the support. The finds date to the end of the 3rd – 6th centuries AD and include pieces of iron slag, fragments of terracotta lamps and moulds for their production, scrapped production from a workshop for bone objects and coins. In that period the ditch was gradually filled up to the level of the water-conduit.
