    Season

      • The excavations on the site of _Cures_ _Sabini_, loc. Talocci, at Fara in Sabina (RI), was coordinated by M. Cavalieri and carried out by a team of archaeologists from Belgian and Italian universities, in collaboration with the Archaeological Superintendency of Lazio. This season, the aim was to recover, document and revise studies of the city’s well-known mid-imperial bath complex with a view to evaluating the possibility of a future excavation on the site. Therefore, the aim was to clean the structures and then make a new structural and conservation study, integrated with previous investigations of various types: geo-diagnostic and archive research, the latter to recover plans, photographs, and excavation reports on the building that has been overwhelmed by vegetation during the many years that the site has been left uncared for. Before this work began, a surface survey was undertaken in the inter-valley spaces at the foot of the hill where the church of Santa Maria degli Arci stands, with the aim of documenting any scatters of tile and/or pottery or morphological anomalies in the terrain, sometimes interpreted as traces of the city’s theatre. The survey, limited by the presence of young olive trees and long grass, identified a necropolis in an area already occupied by a proto-historic settlement situated on the hillside overlooking the river Corese. The materials recovered dated to between the late 1st and early 3rd centuries A.D. During the campaign a geophysical survey (3D surface tomography) to the north-east of the baths, was undertaken by GEORES S.R.L. of Frosinone. The cleaning of the complex and the recording were divided into four areas, each constituted by one room (rooms I-IV). Following the evaluation of the site by UCLouvain, a second campaign was undertaken in 2014.
      • The second campaign of archaeological investigations in the monumental area of _Cures_ Sabina_ by UCLovain, in collaboration with the Archaeological Superintendency of Lazio, aimed to complete the feasability study for a future excavation on the site. It was decided to make a 3D survey of the standing structures; the main aim was to produce an accurate and metrically correct documentation of the walls, both in the horizontal, planimetric, and the vertical components. Image-based mapping techniques were used, based on algorithms of structure-form-motion and stereo multi-view. These methods allow the three dimensional data to be extracted automatically from a set of un-calibrated digital photographs, thus it is possible undertake very accurate mapping in the field in much less time than when using traditional photogrammetry and laser scanning. Furthermore, the removal of the vegetation around the mid-imperial bath complex revealed a c. 15 m long stretch of wall, perhaps of late date, but above all, of difficult interpretation, partly because it was never published although excavated in the 1980s. The runs of the imposing complex, built using a particular mixed technique (bricks and ashlar blocks of local stone) were completely surveyed using a total station and will be published shortly. Lastly, a 50 m2 trench was opened in the area where 19th century documentation records that Lanciani’s excavations identified the presence of an _opus_ _spicatum_ floor to the east of the so-called _apodyterium_ of the baths, a zone entered via an opening in the back wall, with a marble threshold. Once the removal of the trees and the detritus that had accumulated in the area over the last 30 years was completed it was possible to check the reliability of this source and evaluate the suggestion that the bath building continued to the east. The season concluded with a campaign of aerial photography using a drone, in order to obtain photographic material for study and a film of the state of preservation of the entire archaeological area.
