Season

    • The archaeological intervention carried out in Ramón y Cajal 53 street from Aspe has documented one part of an Islamic necropolis. The total occupied surface is unknown. The Islamic settlement in the village is represented by the farmhouses located in the surroundings of Castillo del Río and by the ancient mosque covered by the current church Nuestra Señora del Socorro. The Islamic cemeteries were located at the sides of the main roads of the town. In this case the zone is in what is considered the external perimeter of the old town. In this necropolis were found eleven individual burials corresponding to three kinds: 1) a pit with a small cave, adobe low wall roofed with _macabrilla_, 2) a pit with a small cave and low sandstone wall and 3) a pit with a small cave and a low adobe wall. All were oriented northeast-southwest but in the southern part of the plot there was a slight displacement to the north.. The explanation might lie on the season when the burials were made burials. The burials are rectangular in plan, with curved ends and, in some cases, are delimited by small stones at the corners. The subjects always lie in a right lateral position although there are signs of displacements due to post- depositional processes. They are all adults, although their sex has not yet been determined. In grave number six were found two bones apparently belonging to a child inhumation. Although, typically of Islamic burials there are no grave goods the overburden contains material from the late sixteenth century through the modern period. This derives from recently-demolished housing. (translation by Esther Casares Carmona)
