Season

    • An archaeological excavation was undertaken during the construction of a new house. Previous trial trenches, had ascertained the presence of a burnt layer containing archaeological remains. The removal of a colluvial deposit revealed a layer circa 30-50cm thick within which were a few Roman remains, including two coins from the end of the 4th-beginning of the 5th centuries B.C. At a depth of 3.50m the remains of an Iron Age (4th centuryB.C.) wooden hut, with a circular hearth on its western side, came to light. Unfortunately only the northern part of the building (4.5m x 2.6m) was preserved. The southern part had been eroded away in antiquity. The simple wooden hut had a plaster facing. It was destroyed by fire after being abandoned. The destruction layer, which overlay it, contained burnt plaster, charcoal and parts of the wooden beam from the hut's north frontage and a wooden post that was placed in the north-east corner. Dendrochronological analysis will be undertaken by the laboratory at Rovereto Civic Museum. A stone make-up, which probably formed the base for wooden posts, would seem to indicate the west wall. The bad state of conservation has made it impossible to establish the existence of another structure to the west of this wall, which may have been an open area with some sort of covering relating to the hearth area. Only a few fragments of 4th century B.C. pottery were found on the floor level below the destruction layer. Below the hut a very eroded Neolithic layer, 15cm thick, came to light. It contained charcoal, fragments of Neolithic pottery and a flint blade.
