Season

    • The excavations at Anglona have uncovered importance evidence regarding the Classical phase, when a small farming village, belonging to the _chora_ of Herakleia, was established on the plain and the medieval phase, when the western part of the hill was transformed into a stronghold comprising a small fortress and a watchtower. The 2017 excavation results seem to indicate the existence of defences whose perimeter wall follow the line of the hill’s edge, almost forming an irregular trapezium. The excavations investigated a substantial building, situated in the area south of the small fort. The main occupation phases (12th and 14th centuries), were attested by floor surfaces associated with walls that are interpreted as service rooms. The final occupation phase (15th century) marked a change in the use of the building, judging by the presence of structures for milling agricultural products. The existence of occupation phases in this area pre-dating the post-antique period were confirmed by ceramic finds dating to the 4th and 3rd centuries B.C. The materials relate to the occupation of the settlement of Pandosia, the village belonging to the _chora_ of Herakleia, attested by the sources and by our inter-site investigations. In addition, fragments of impasto pottery dating to the proto-historic period were also found. Lastly, the geophysical surveys carried out by IBAM-CNR identified significant anomalies, probably relating to several groups of burials situated on the south slope of the hill.
    • The investigations at Anglona are bringing to light important evidence relating to the Classical phase, when a small agricultural village belonging to the _chora_ of _Heraklaia_ was built on the plateau, and to the medieval period, when the western part of the hill was transformed into a defended site comprising a small fortress with a watchtower. In 2018, excavations investigated the medieval fortress, formed by two buildings, and the work was divided into two zones: trench 2, on the south side of the fortress where there is an imposing building (CF2) and trench 3, on the north side of the fortress where part of defensive curtain wall was intercepted. In trench 2, several important interventions relating to the occupation phases were identified. An intervention, datable to between the 17th and 18th centuries, involved the digging of robber trenches in order to extract material that was reusable for the construction of the buildings annexed to the church of S. Maria. Another intervention, datable to between the 15th and 16th centuries, saw the construction and reorganisation of several spaces in CF2 that were to be used for milling grain. Below the phases just described, the excavations exposed materials and structures belonging to the occupation phases of small Angevin and Svevan fort (13th-14th centuries). These were destruction levels mainly comprising imbrices and soil layers with clear traces of burning. Lastly, a layer of dark clay with abundant traces of charcoal with the characteristics of a dark soil probably of medieval date. This layer covered a Hellenistic wall built of stones and tiles, which will be investigated during the coming campaigns.
