Season

    • APOLLONIA – SOZOPOLIS (Pavlina Devlova – devlova@newobjects.com, Ilia Kirov) The site was situated on Skamni Peninsula. A building and debris of house of the Ottoman period were discovered. A Christian cemetery of the 13th – 14th centuries (dated by the pottery) and the 11th century (dated by the grave goods in Grave No. 21: a bronze and a bone cross) was discovered. A chapel of the 11th – 12th centuries was explored. It measured 3 m by 3 m and its walls were 25 – 30 cm wide, built of cut stones bonded with mud. Four pits were explored, containing sherds of the 5th – 4th centuries BC. Special attention deserves a red-figure krater with a scene showing Oedipus and the sphinx, dated to the second half of the 5th century BC. A dug out structure (probably a house) of the end of the 6th – beginning of the 5th centuries BC was explored. It measured 4.30 m by 3.40 m and eight postholes were documented, each one 20 – 58 cm in diameter and 45 cm in depth. The finds included sherds from amphorae, imported and local pottery, a bronze arrow-coin of Apollonia and coins.
