Chronology

  • 700 AD - 1700 AD

Season

    • During the year 2017, the excavations in Drisht were focused on two different areas. The first was in the deposit located on the outside of building no. 1, which was of interest because a tract of wall, part of the northern facade of the building, resting on the rocky sides of the hill, created an irregular "room" with a length of 2.50m and a width of 0.30-1.50m. Judging from the location, this room must have been intact and probably rich in material culture. After the cleaning of the deposit, and at depth of about 2.10m, it became possible to document the wall of the building. The wall had an east-west orientation, with a length of 2.50 m, and is preserved at a height of 2.10 m and is 0.55 - 0.60 m wide. Local limestone, with little or no work, was used for its construction. The archaeological material found consists of fragmented pottery (kitchenware), building materials (fragments of bricks, tiles and cobblestones), fragments of glass vessels, fragments of pipes and animal bones. The second trench was opened in Saint Paul's Cave; the aim was to identify the material culture of the prehistoric period. The cave is located outside the surrounding walls of the castle, on the northeastern side of the hill, to the right of the neck with the same name. At the entrance of the cave, a trench with dimensions 0.70 x 0.70m was opened, and the excavation reached a depth of 0.60m. After the end of the excavation, it was possible to identify only remains of the fire (charcoal), shells, two pieces of a buckle. The above data doesn’t confirm, at least for the moment, the use of this cave in prehistoric times.
