Season

    • Work was undertaken by the Soprintendenza per i Beni Architettonici e per il Paesaggio for the provinces of Siena and Grossetto to restore the church and create a new museum. During completion of the excavation inside the church, which formed part of this project, a pavement was uncovered in the northwest corner. This was made up of bipedales resting on small pilasters built of bessali and formed part of a Roman bath complex of the early Imperial period. It was heavily disturbed by the Renaissance cemetery, excavated in 1998, which overlies it. Two rooms in opus mixtum and stretches of water channels were uncovered in the eastern part of the church. This find is of interest as it partially resolves the function of the stretch of opus reticulatum wall already seen at the beginning of the 19th century along the north wall of the church. A further surprise was the discovery of a small hoard of circa 500 gold coins dating to the 5th century A.D., hidden inside a small, fragmented jar placed next to this wall. The excavation confirmed the site's complex stratigraphy which runs from the late Bronze Age (post-holes in the crypt) to the modern period (cemetery area). (Gabriella Barbieri)
