Season

    • Restoration of the Roman cistern has provided new data regarding this structure which is under a restriction order. One trench was dug at the entrance to the cistern and another was put in along its north-east side. This rectangular cistern, in opus caementicium, is complete despite having been restructured many times throughout its history. It was part of a villa, of early Imperial date, which had a bath complex and monumental nymphaeum. The trench dug to the north-east revealed the cement conglomerate foundations of the structure constructe 'a sacco'. These foundations differed from the walls (that must have originally been below ground level for the most part) as they contained a lower percentage of stones. The trench situated in front of the present entrance brought to light a tank in opus signinum situated in correspondence with an aperture for the cistern's over-flow, which was later modified by the insertion of a lead pipe with a shut-off valve. Two stretches of wall, at right angles, belong to an unexcavated structure of a later phase. An infant burial (inhumation), which did not contain any grave goods, is probably of post-classical date.
