Chronology

Season

    • The Karstik system of the “Covoli di Velo” is formed by three main caverns (Grotta Superiore, Grotta Inferiore or Grotta dell’Orso and Covolo dell’Acqua), by several smaller caves and numerous cuniculi and cavities whose entrances are situated at a short distance from the upper Covolo valley. In 2005 the excavation looked at a small area of terrain along the eastern wall of the terminal cave of the Grotta Inferiore at circa 150m from the entrance. The stratigraphy revealed two main levels: the upper one being sterile, the lower rich in fossils. In the latter five floor levels were identified, constituted by medium sized clumps (10-15cm). An analysis of the paleontological contents revealed that almost all the macroscopic finds could be attributed to the Ursus genus, whilst the remains recovered from sieving belong to small mammals. To be noted the presence of the remains of young bears of less than one year of age. (MiBAC)
