Summary (English)

  • The excavation of the buildings to the west of the basilica (sector 9000) having been completed in 2009, the investigations undertaken in June-August 2010 concentrated on the area inside the building (sector 10000). Here, the removal of the post-medieval deposits, revealed levels in correspondence with which the remains of under-floor tombs emerged, which in most of the area resulted as still covered by an occupation level extending uniformly within the investigated part of the building (US 10023). Above this occupation level there were rather extensive accumulations of material, relating to the robbing of the burials probably in the late medieval period.

The excavations were limited to the western arm of the ambulatory and central nave of the basilica. The above mentioned deposits identified above the occupation level US 10023 were removed, some of which filled robber pits cutting into US 10023 itself. The latter was the object of an open area excavation which remains to be completed in the eastern arm of the ambulatory. Subsequently, the pavement tombs were excavated, the majority of which had been completely robbed. However, in some cases intact deposition levels came to light below accumulations of disturbed material.

Future excavations will continue the investigation of the tombs in the western arm of the basilica’s ambulatory and its central nave; at the same time excavation of US 10023 in the eastern arm will be completed in order to uncover the funerary structures present in this sector.
