Chronology

  • 200 BC - 1200 AD

Season

    • The 2005 excavation involved three monumental complexes: the _domus_ of the “Nile Threshold”, the early medieval church and the theatre with its _porticus ad scaenum_. In the area of the _domus_ the excavation was undertaken in the eastern sector, where a service area (kitchens and related structures) was identified, characterised by various building phases from the Republican period to the late Empire. At the same time excavation of the central stairway was completed where a mid Imperial drainage system, comprising pits dug into the floor and filled with pottery fragments, was uncovered. Stratigraphic investigations were undertaken in the apse of the church and in the area in front of the entrance. Excavation was completed of the east nave’s pavement and conservation work was carried out on the walls. As regards the theatre- _porticus ad scaenum_ complex, the excavation of the _tabernae_ around the east, south and west of the area was completed. The stratigraphic investigations in the western apsed hall provided enough data for the definition of the stage building and uncovered structures forming part of the _cavea_. These were found razed to foundation level and cut by medieval defensive ditches, the line of which was identified together with the embankment. (MiBAC)
